Working with people to develop skills and a sense of personal worth has been a goal of mine since I started studying at university while helping coach American football and volunteering with at-risk youth. Developing a sense of personal connection creates cooperation and personal responsibility between people and I use this mentality in my career teaching English.
The methodology of teaching I follow involves the 5 language systems (phonology, lexis, grammar, function, and discourse) and 4 language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) tailored to the students’ wants and needs. Based on this information I am able to create a learning environment to fit the requirements of the student from an intensive FCE preparation course to a laid back and relaxed conversation course. Materials range from textbooks to magazine and journal articles, comics, TED.com videos, and my own presentations.
I’ve been teaching English for more than 10 years, beginning with one year in Spain, 2 years in Plzen and the rest here in Prague. I have also taught World History and Geography at Mountain Pointe High School in Phoenix, Arizona. While attending university I was an assistant coach in American football at the high school I attended, Corona del Sol High School.
I earned a B.A. in History from Arizona State University and later a Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from the University of Phoenix. I’ve also experienced office life as a pharmaceutical representative and market research specialist. Since I started teaching, however, I feel like I have found my career path.
I am a huge sports fan and participant, playing Gaelic football, Australian Football, squash, and beach volleyball- all here in Prague. I even used to play American football for the Plzen Patriots for 2 years!
